Geosmin er en lipofil forbindelse der har en kraftig jordagtig lugt. Forbindelsen er bl.a. fundet i havejord (Buttery and Garibaldi, 1976), rødbeder (Beta vulgaris) (Parliment et al. 1977), laks (Salmo salar) (Farmer et al. 1995) og i en malleart (Ictalurus punctatus) (Lloyd and Grimm, 1999). Forbindelsen er ligeledes fundet i rød- og hvidvine med jordagtig aromafejl (Darriet. et al. 2000).
